Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has said he believes the team is more important than the individual, a view which could have a bearing on Christian Benteke’s future.
Lambert was talking in reference to the situation at Borussia Dortmund after the Champions League finalists sold Mario Gotze to rivals Bayern Munich.
The Scot, who helped Dortmund win the competition in 1997, may face a similar situation at Villa Park this summer with star striker Christian Benteke heavily linked to a move away. But Lambert says he believes no player should ever be bigger than the club.
“It’s tough because you have to look after your football club, which is important. No one player should ever be bigger than the club.
“The club’s got to be there for years after I’ve gone from it. So you can’t get caught on keeping one guy there; you’ve got to invest and build a team rather than just individuals all the time.
“Dortmund got €37 million, I guarantee you Klopp would be hurt initially, but then he’d think: ‘OK, I can get one there, one here…’ and the team becomes stronger.
“If you keep getting results, the fans will have no problem.”
